Essential Oils & Aromatherapy: A Simple Guide to Nature’s Power

There’s something quite special about scent, isn’t there? One moment you catch the aroma of pine needles or citrus peel and suddenly you’re transported  - calmer, happier, more at ease. That’s the power of aromatherapy in action.

What Is Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is the practice of using natural plant extracts - essential oils - to support wellbeing of the mind and body. It’s a gentle way of bringing balance, calm, and focus through the natural aromas of plants.

What Are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are concentrated extracts taken from flowers, leaves, bark or resins. Each carries the unique scent and therapeutic properties of the plant it comes from - Lavender to calm, Eucalyptus to clear, Sweet Orange to uplift.

They’re carefully extracted through distillation or cold pressing, capturing the plant’s aromatic compounds — the “essence” that gives it life and character.

The Power of Scent

When you inhale a scent, tiny molecules travel through your nose to the olfactory system, the part of the brain linked to memory, emotion, and mood. That’s why aromas can affect how we feel so quickly - one breath can shift your state of mind within seconds.

Aromatherapy works because of this connection between scent and emotion, helping to calm, uplift or focus the mind depending on the oils you choose.

Ways to Use Essential Oils

Many people ask me about the best ways to use our pure essential oil blends - not just in diffusers, but in simple, effective everyday rituals. There are three main methods: inhalation, topical use, and ingestion.

At Soapery 21, I focus on the first two — safe, natural, and wonderfully effective ways to bring aromatherapy into daily life.

1. Inhalation

Inhalation is the easiest and often the most immediate way to enjoy essential oils. It works quickly because the scent molecules reach your brain in seconds.

You can:

  • Add a few drops of a pure essential oil blend to your diffuser or burner to fill your space with natural fragrance.

  • Spritz a room mist for an instant mood lift or calming moment.

  • Add a drop to a tissue and inhale deeply when you need to focus, unwind, or ground yourself.

Each blend works a little differently  -  some energise, some soothe, others help you rest. The beauty of aromatherapy is that you can choose exactly what you need in the moment.

2. Topical Use

Essential oils can also be absorbed through the skin when blended safely with a carrier oil (never apply them neat). This makes them perfect for:

  • Massage blends for relaxation or energy

  • Bath oils to soothe body and mind

  • Skincare and body care that bring both aromatic and skin-loving benefits

If you enjoy a more hands-on ritual, a few drops of your favourite pure essential oil blend mixed into a carrier oil makes a lovely addition to self-care time  - add to a bath or use as a hand massage.

Our aromatherapy candles and wax melts  also bring this gentle benefit through the air  - slowly diffusing essential oils into your space for calm, comfort, and warmth.

3. A Note on Ingestion

You may have seen information online about taking essential oils internally. I don’t recommend this. Essential oils are highly concentrated and should only be taken under the guidance of a qualified clinical aromatherapist. Used correctly through inhalation and topical application, they offer all the benefits you need safely and effectively.

Bringing Aromatherapy Into Everyday Life

Aromatherapy doesn’t need to be complicated  -  it’s about creating small, mindful moments. Whether that’s diffusing a blend in the morning, misting your room in the evening, or lighting a candle as you unwind, it’s all about connection  - to scent, to nature, and to yourself.

Each blend I create at Soapery 21 is designed to support that connection  - helping you slow down, breathe deeply, and bring a little natural harmony into your everyday life.
