So let’s dig deeper into Earth Day, what is it and why is it so important to us?
What Is Earth Day?
Earth Day is an annual event celebrated on April 22nd to demonstrate support for environmental protection. The day was first celebrated in 1970 and is now observed in more than 190 countries around the world. It is a day for us all to come together, take action to protect the planet and raise awareness about environmental issues such as pollution, deforestation, and climate change.
On Earth Day, we can all participate in events such as beach cleanups, tree planting, recycling drives, and educational activities to promote sustainability and conservation. The day is also a time to reflect on our impact on the environment and think about ways, however small, that we can reduce our own carbon footprint and live more sustainably.
At Soapery 21, we choose sustainable practices all year around. But as Earth Day approaches, we are excited to share with you all the ways we are making a difference in our local community and beyond.
Da Voar Redd Up: Shetland's Community Clean-Up Event
Every year, Shetland communities come together for Da Voar Redd Up, a fantastic community clean-up event aimed at keeping our beautiful islands clean and litter-free. The event takes place in late April or early May and is organised by the Shetland Amenity Trust. Soapery 21 is proud to support and participate in this initiative, helping to preserve the natural beauty of our Islands.
During Da Voar Redd Up, volunteers from all over Shetland come together to clean up litter and debris from beaches, roadsides, and other public areas. The event aims to raise awareness of the environmental impact of litter and to promote a sense of community pride in keeping Shetland clean and beautiful.
Everyone is provided with bags and gloves to collect litter, and the collected rubbish is then either recycled or disposed of properly. The event is a great opportunity for people of all ages to come together and make a positive impact on our local environment.
Da Voar Redd Up has been taking place in Shetland for over 30 years and has grown significantly in size and popularity over the years. It has become an important annual event for our community, helping to keep Shetland clean and preserving its natural beauty for future generations to enjoy.
The 2 Minute Beach Clean: Taking Action Against Ocean Litter
We are passionate about protecting our oceans from pollution, which is why we also support the #2minutebeachclean movement. By participating in beach clean-ups and raising awareness about the impact of litter on coastal communities, Soapery 21 is dedicated to reducing ocean pollution and preserving marine ecosystems
This Earth Day, why not dedicate just 2 minutes to making a big difference in the health of our oceans. The 2 Minute Beach Clean movement, encourages everyone to spend a short amount of time picking up litter on their next beach visit.
It's a simple action that can have a powerful impact. Plastic pollution is a major threat to marine life, and by removing litter from our beaches, we can help protect our seas and the creatures that call them home.
Anyone can participate in the 2 Minute Beach Clean - no special equipment required! Just grab a bag and pick up any rubbish you see on the beach. There are also #2 minute beach clean stations set up on some beaches, providing litter pickers and bags for easy cleaning.

Supporting CleanHub: Preventing Plastic from Reaching the Ocean
Plastic pollution is a growing problem, threatening our oceans and marine life. While many initiatives focus on cleaning up existing plastic waste, CleanHub takes a different approach. This non-profit organisation works to prevent plastic pollution from reaching our oceans in the first place
CleanHub's strategy is multi-pronged. They target the most problematic plastic waste, focusing on non-recyclable plastics that make up 80% of ocean plastic pollution. They partner with waste collectors in vulnerable coastal areas, where proper waste management infrastructure is often lacking. This approach tackles the issue at its source and empowers local communities.
CleanHub also works to minimise the environmental impact of plastic production by collaborating with brands to offset their plastic footprint. Their ultimate goal is ambitious yet crucial: preventing 50% of new ocean plastic by 2030.
We are proud to contribute to CleanHub's efforts by partnering with them and ensuring that every order placed on our website helps support their clean up mission.
Planting Trees with Ecologi: Offsetting Carbon Footprint
Ecologi is a company on a mission to tackle climate change through tree planting and carbon reduction initiatives. They offer a unique way for individuals and businesses to get involved.
Anyone can subscribe to monthly plans that directly fund tree planting projects and verified carbon offset initiatives. Businesses can also partner with Ecologi to plant trees or support carbon reduction projects with each transaction - which is what Soapery21 has chosen to do.
Ecologi focuses on planting native trees in areas with the greatest need for restoration to ensure long-term survival and maximum impact. In partnership with Ecologi, we are committed to offsetting our carbon footprint by planting a tree with every online order placed through our website.
Making a Positive Impact
Earth Day serves as a reminder of the importance of taking care of our planet and working together to create a healthier and more sustainable future for generations to come.
It is a reminder to appreciate the beauty of nature and commit to making any positive changes we can throughout the year, to protect our world for future generations.
