3 Simple DIY Natural Home Aromatherapy Ideas from Soapery 21

With spring in full swing, there's no better time to explore the benefits of essential oils and learn a little more about how aromatherapy can bring the warmth and joy of nature into our homes.

Just like the blooming hedgerows, blossoming trees and rising birdsong of spring, essential oils can powerfully deliver that natural, energetic sense of freshness and vitality into our indoor living spaces.

By choosing essential oils, which are derived and distilled from plants and flowers, we can easily create a calming, uplifting and welcoming atmosphere that encourages relaxation and boosts our mood

How Do Essential Oils Support Our Emotions?

Essential oils are supportive for our emotions because they can have a direct impact on the limbic system of our brain, which is responsible for controlling emotions and memory.

When inhaled or applied to the skin, the aromatic compounds in essential oils can trigger a response in the body, such as the release of neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, which can help to uplift our mood and reduce feelings of stress and anxiety.

As well as the physiological benefits, the calming ritual of using essential oils can be a form of self-care and mindfulness in itself. Lighting a candle, or adding a few drops of a favourite oil to a diffuser can be a mindful touchstone in our day, a small but powerful moment of calm and connection

3 Simple DIY Natural Home Aromatherapy Ideas

We have put together 3 of our favourite DIY natural aromatherapy ideas from Soapery 21 to help us easily bring the benefits of aromatherapy into our daily routines at home.

  1. Diffuse Essential Oils

The easiest way to use essential oils at home is to use an essential oil diffuser. It’s simple to experiment with different oils just by adding a few drops and inhaling.

Lavender and chamomile are popular choices for promoting relaxation, while peppermint and rosemary are wonderful for supporting clarity and memory. Note down the oils you enjoy and create an aromatherapy blend that suits you.

2.Make Your Own Naturally Scented Candles

Add  essential oil to melted vegetable wax such as soy or rapeseed and pour it into a suitable candle container with a wick to create your own natural aromatic candles. You can find a more detailed guide to natural candle making here.

In addition to the aroma, candlelight provides a sensory experience that can be both beautiful and beneficial to our well-being too. The soft, flickering glow of a candle sets a calming and inviting mood, perfect for creating a cosy ambiance and unwinding after a long day

3. Create a DIY Reed Diffuser

In a small bottle or jar fill to ¾ full with Witch hazel add up to 100 drop of your chosen essential oils, shake to mix well.

Pop in natural reeds, about 4 will do for a small jar, it will take up to 24 hours for the scent to infuse through the reeds.

Enjoy the aroma of your chosen blend as it fills your space.

A Few Safety Tips When Using Essential Oils

Essential oils can be so great for creating a calming or invigorating atmosphere, but it's important to be cautious and use them safely, especially when you have kids and pets around.

Here are some key safety tips:

Research child-safe and pet-safe essential oils: Not all oils are safe for everyone and you can find more detailed information here

Dilute oils properly: Essential oils are very concentrated and can be irritating to the skin and respiratory system. Always dilute them with a carrier oil like jojoba or almond oil before application on your skin.

Diffuse with caution: Diffusers are a great way to disperse essential oils in the air, but be mindful of the room size and ventilation. Keep an eye on children and pets and allow them to leave the room if they seem bothered.

Never ingest essential oils: Essential oils are not safe to swallow and can be poisonous.

Store them safely: Keep essential oils out of reach of children and pets. They should be stored in a cool, dark place in tightly sealed containers.
